This You-Tube video created by Technology for Teachers and Students is a very comprehensive tutorial for using the free version of Screencast-o-matic, including but not limited to logging in, changing user preferences, editing, and saving or uploading videos.
Watch this video series that Screencast-o-matic, the fast, free online screen recording tool, has created to help users create a scripted recording. On certain occasions you may find that having a script to read is helpful, especially when just learning how to use this toolkit. This video series gives step by step instructions for creating the script using this online resource.
Materials you will need:
- Student writing pieces
- PC or laptop with built-in microphone
- External microphone, if one isn't installed on your device
- Account with an online screencast recorder
Setting-Up:
- Go to www.screencast-o-matic.com
- Sign up for a free account. This requires minimal time and information.
- If this is your first screencast, click the button to download the Recorder Launcher on your device. This process should only take a minute.
- View the Screencast-o-matic Tutorials, if desired. Their Recorder Intros video is very helpful and less than two minutes long!
- Since you will be viewing your student's writing on the computer, you can have them type them, save, and send them to you electronically OR ask for a parent volunteer to scan them for you.
Recording your Feedback Screencast:
- Open your student's writing file on your PC.
- In another window, open Screencast-o-matic and log in, if needed.
- Click Start Recorder or Launch Recorder, depending on your screen.
- The Recording Box will appear in the bottom left corner. Choose to record your screen, webcam, or both. For the purpose of Feedback Screencasts, I recommend focusing on the screen to reduce distractions.
- Click and drag the icon in the center of the screen to position your screencast to your liking. The outer perimeter should only include what you want students to view.
- When you are ready to begin, click record. You can record up to 15 minutes in one recording. You can pause, stop, discard, or cancel at any time.
- When finished and satisfied, click Done. You will be provided with a link to share with your student.
- At this time, you can start your next recording.
